The Main Point – A Better Promise (Hebrews 8:1-13)

Here is a profound truth: God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and ever-present. He establishes the rules, designs the plans, and provides the grace we need to follow Him. For some, this reality provokes rebellion in their hearts and minds; for others, it brings deep comfort and lasting hope, hope found only in the greatness of the God we serve. God’s ways lead to God’s results. Trust Him.

The writer of Hebrews directs our attention to a main, Spirit-inspired truth: we have a perfect High Priest, (Christ Jesus), who is seated at the place of highest honor, at the right hand of the throne of Majesty in Heaven. He serves as our officiating Priest in the true tabernacle, the heavenly sanctuary established by the Lord Himself. Romans 8:31-39

Every earthly high priest was appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices as part of his duties to God. In the same way, it was necessary for Christ Jesus to have something to offer. He offered Himself once as the sacrifice for our sins.
Hebrews 7:26-28

Jesus was not and is not an earthly priest serving under the Law. He has obtained a priestly ministry that is far greater than the old Levitical priesthood. He is the only Mediator of a better covenant that brings God and man together, a covenant established and built on better promises. 1 Timothy 2:1-8

Let’s look back for a moment. If the first covenant had been without fault, there would have been no need for a second, nor any reason to introduce a new covenant. Yet God, through the prophet Jeremiah, foretold the coming of this new covenant. Jeremiah 31:31-34

When God spoke of “a new covenant,” He declared the first one obsolete. The old covenant required the continual, daily sacrifice of animals as a constant reminder of the people’s sin. But as Hebrews 10:4 reminds us, “it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.”

If, by faith, we have believed in Jesus for the salvation of our souls, then we are under the new covenant. This means we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. His perfect offering brought an end to the need for repeated animal sacrifices. As Scripture declares, “Where sins and lawless acts have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.” Ephesians 2:8,9; Hebrews 10:18
