We as humans love stories. Firsthand experiences capture our attention, and when a story is told with clarity, we can almost see ourselves experiencing the events through the storyteller’s eyes. Today, we have the opportunity to hear King Nebuchadnezzar’s firsthand account of the wonders of God.
King Nebuchadnezzar addressed his experience and testimony to the nations and peoples of every language throughout the Earth. Some of these were the same people who had witnessed the events of that glorious day some twenty years earlier when the three Hebrews refused to bow down to King Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image on the plain of Dura.
Nebuchadnezzar repeatedly used the pronoun “I” throughout his testimony. He wanted the world to know what he had personally experienced and to declare how great God is. More importantly, he wanted everyone to understand that God rules over all the kingdoms of men from generation to generation.
God gave Nebuchadnezzar another serious vision while he was lying on his bed. We might call it God’s Mighty Tree Dream.
Nebuchadnezzar recalled seeing a watcher, a holy angel, come down from Heaven and loudly give instructions concerning the cutting down of the tree. The vision was a teaching experience to inform Nebuchadnezzar, and ultimately all people, that God has divine ownership over everything and does with His creation as He pleases.
Daniel was called upon to give God’s interpretation of this mighty tree dream because God had gifted him with understanding in visions and dreams. Nebuchadnezzar knew this about Daniel. Daniel 1:17
Daniel faithfully and truthfully revealed the coming judgment of God upon the king’s life. He compassionately called Nebuchadnezzar to repentance and righteous living.
Let us be reminded that God is sovereign over kingdoms, rulers, and every individual life. God graciously warns us before judgment comes and calls us to humble ourselves before Him. Therefore, we should not wait for God to bring us low before we acknowledge His authority. Let us humble ourselves today, submit to the Most High, and live in obedience to His Word, knowing that He alone rules in the kingdom of men. 1 Peter 5:6
