Throughout mankind’s history, God has spoken through the voices and writings of His prophets, giving revelation in many portions and in many ways, each declaring a portion of His truth. In Daniel 4, God specifically foretold Nebuchadnezzar’s humiliation through the dream of the mighty tree. We can count on this truth: God always keeps His Word.
Like Nebuchadnezzar, we can become distracted, self-sufficient, and forgetful of who is truly in charge of our lives if we are not careful. Twelve short months after Daniel delivered God’s warning, the king experienced the divine judgment that had been foretold because of his arrogant heart. Proverbs 6:16-18
God executed His sentence upon Nebuchadnezzar so that all would know what happens to those who walk in pride. More importantly, God demonstrated that He alone is the Ruler of all things. He gives authority to whomever He wishes, and He takes authority away from whomever He wishes. He alone is Almighty God.
King Nebuchadnezzar endured a seven-year period of divinely imposed humiliation. His mind was taken from him, and he lived as though he were an animal, taking on an animal-like appetite and appearance. The mighty and prideful king was humbled before his entire kingdom.
At the end of his appointed period, God shed His grace on the king and proved Himself faithful to His Word. Nebuchadnezzar recorded that he lifted his eyes toward Heaven, and his reason and understanding returned to him. His restoration began when he looked away from himself and toward God. Psalm 121:1-4
After restoration, the king blessed, praised, and honored the eternal Most High God. He proclaimed the insignificance of man in comparison with the greatness and sovereignty of God. He acknowledged that God’s dominion is everlasting and that His kingdom endures from generation to generation.
Through his experience, Nebuchadnezzar recognized and proclaimed that God is the King of Heaven and Earth. His will shall be accomplished. His works are truth, and His ways are justice. This applies to us today. Romans 3:21-26
The king’s final warning is one we should take seriously: Those who walk in pride, God is able to humble. Proverbs 3:31-35; James 4:6-10
