The Light Shines Bright (John 1:1-18)

The Holy Scriptures give us glimpses of what took place before the foundation of the world, and these truths should bring great comfort to believers. We have a Savior who is eternal. God’s grace toward us was purposed in eternity past, and because His plan of salvation is eternal, it is unchanging—nothing can frustrate, alter, or hinder it. Before the foundation of the world, God established His gracious design to love us, redeem us, lavish us with grace, and make us holy. And when the fullness of time had come, God sent His Son so that we might receive adoption as sons. Galatians 4:4,5

The Son of God is not a created being. Before the universe was made, He shared glory with the Father, was loved by the Father, and dwelt in perfect fellowship with Him. While on earth, Jesus affirmed this truth in His High Priestly Prayer, acknowledging the glory and love He had with the Father before the foundation of the world. John 17:24

John presented the doctrine of the deity of Christ by affirming His co-eternal nature with God and His role as Creator of the universe. Jesus, “the Word,” is not merely a representation of God; He is God and has existed eternally.

Spiritual darkness describes the state of those living apart from God. John testified that Jesus is the Light who pierced the world’s darkness with the truth of God. John the Baptist made clear that he himself was not the Light, but a witness to the Light—Jesus. All who place their faith in Christ, believing in His name, are given the privilege of becoming children of God, born not by natural descent or human will, but by God through a divine and supernatural new birth. 2 Corinthians 4:1–6

The “Word” became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory—the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. From His fullness we have all received grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God the Father, but the one and only Son, who is at the Father’s side and shares His very nature, has made Him known. Exodus 20; John 14:8–25

Do you know Him? Have you believed in the only name by which we must be saved? His name is Jesus. Acts 4:12
